DRUM BEAT...
continued from page 12..
Esparza has been playing drums for 35 years. Rock and Roll was his first important influence. One day fourteen years ago, he was drawn to this drumming form. As the old saying goes, "When the student is ready a teacher ap-pears," and this is exactly what happen-ed to Thomas. By chance, he walked into a jazz club in southern California, carrying his first small African drum. Earnest Moody, a well-known master of African drum and dance, was playing that night. The moment he saw Tho-mas, he stopped pla-ying to invite him to join in. This experi-ence profoundly changed him, and Moody set him on the path of his life's work.
The Baja drum circle is held every third Saturday at 6 pm, everyone is invited to join in. Bring your own drums or try your hands on one of Tho- mas' African drums. There is no charge. Come early and enjoy the opening ceremo-ny held at the be-autiful gazebo across the street from Jo-anna Jones Gallery in Cantamar.
